Research Commissioner plans for new European Innovation Council

19 January, Brussels – The European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Carlos Moedas, has indicated his intention to create a European Innovation Council (EIC) as a one-stop shop for innovation, similar in vein to the European Research Council.

The exact role and function of the proposed EIC is not yet well-defined, with discussions on whether it should hand out grants for innovators, or provide advice and guidance only. There is also ongoing debate regarding its financing. Horizon 2020 is due to have its mid-term review in 2017, which could allocate funding to the project, but oher sources of funding could include the Structural Funds or private investment.

There is currently no timetable for the creation of the EIC, but numerous public debates and events are expected in the following months, for further discussion.
