11 July 2019, Brussels - The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) has received a new strategic agenda for 2021-2027, which aims to fully align the body with the EU's next research and innovation programme Horizon Europe.
EIT is an independent EU body created in 2008 with a mission to strength Europe's ability to innovate. From 2021 its budget will increase by €600 million to €3 billion. It will fund the activities of existing and new Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs) and support the innovation capacity of 750 higher education institutions.
The EIT currently supports eight KICs which bring together companies, universities and research centres to form cross-border partnerships in different thematic areas: Climate, Digital, Food, Health, Energy, Manufacturing, Raw materals and Urban mobility. Two new KICs are foreseen in the post 2020 programme. One will focus on Culture, while the other is yet to be defined.
The European Commission Decision on the Strategic Innovation Agenda for 2021-2027 will be presented to the European Parliament and the Council for discussion and adoption. You can read the new 2021-2027 strategy in full here.
