The Innovation for Sustainable Development Network (inno4SD.net) aims to support the move towards environmental, social and economic sustainability, by making links between research initiatives in the topics of green growth and eco-innovation, and understand how they can support this transition. To this end, inno4SD will address challenges, ranging from the conceptualisation of the green economy, to the harmonisation of approaches for coherently assessing performance, and identify gaps (successes and failures) for the effective adoption of technologies that can create win-win results.
The inno4SD network will gather stakeholders, carry out global cross-disciplinary research using a systemic approach that integrates socio-economic and environmental sciences, and co-ordinate activities to ensure effective communication and knowledge sharing.
InnovationSeeds: The Eco-Innovation Knowledge Portal
In order to support such knowledge sharing, the inno4SD network will make use of an existing Eco-Innovation Portal, InnovationSeeds.eu, which seeks to maximise the value of environmental research by promoting R&D results, highlighting successful policy initiatives and exploring eco-innovation networks. This portal is being updated to provide new content and web services for the network’s members and other interested parties.
The Portal uses a guided search system so that users can search available content by ‘functional descriptors’ (tags), rather than by keywords. This allows users to narrow down all of the available information, to find exactly what it is that they are looking for, without having to worry about the consistency of terminology. The portal will be enriched with over 40 new eco-innovation policies for sustainable development, as well as providing an interactive policy map and access to webinars and media.
ProfileNet: Join the Community!
Embedded within InnovationSeeds is the new Profile Networking tool (‘ProfileNet’), which aims to provide end-users of the inno4SD network with an intuitive and functional online tool for exchanging information and finding expertise. In order to achieve this, the ProfileNet makes use of the existing functional descriptors that have been developed in InnovationSeeds for describing eco-innovations in the form of interconnected articles. Experts can therefore be searched based on their expertise, geographic origin and competencies.
The ProfileNet provides:
- A database of profiles, including a profiling tool, whereby individuals can tag their profiles using pre-set descriptors, making it possible to search for exactly the expertise that you are looking for;
- A collaborative space for sharing documents and holding discussions of thematic areas of interest to inno4SD network members, where discussions can also be tagged by functional descriptor;
- The ability to post requests for specific input and expertise, also tagged by descriptors.
For more information, see the User Guide. Membership of the ProfileNet is open to professional stakeholders working in eco-innovation, who would like to engage with the inno4SD network. Sign now up at InnovationSeeds.eu!
Symposium: Eco-Innovation for the Water-Energy-Food Nexus
As well as online networking opportunities, the inno4SD network is organising a series of Symposia events for discussing the relationship between innovation and sustainable development. The next event is being co-organised with Future Earth and hosted by the Cyprus Institute. This Symposium, entitled 'Eco-Innovation for the Water-Energy-Food Nexus', will look at the Water-Energy-Food Nexus, with a particular focus on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. This highly interactive Symposium will entail keynote speeches on a number of topics related to sustainable innovation and the nexus, as well as panel discussions, breakout sessions and round tables, with the ultimate aim of devising a Collaborative Research Agenda for the nexus.
Additionally, a number of case studies will be presented to show innovative approaches to nexus management. Case study proposals are welcome. If you would like to register, or apply for participation as a case study presenter, please contact inno4SD@tno.nl. You will receive confirmation of placement within a few days.
