MeeFS – Multifunctional Energy Efficient Façade System for Buildings Retrofitting

The MeeFS (Multifunctional Energy Efficient Facade System for Building Retrofitting) project aims to develop, evaluate and demonstrate an innovative multifunctional façade system for improving the energy efficient retrofitting of the residential building sector across Europe.

Addressing the challenges of retrofitting

Europe’s building stock is made up of around 160 million buildings, being responsible for around 40% of Europe’s primary energy consumption and 30% of greenhouse gas emissions. Although many new builds are now constructed to be energy efficient, more than 80% of Europe’s residential buildings are over 10 years old, and it is here that large efforts are needed to improve energy performance.

Building retrofitting allows existing buildings to be made more energy efficient, but there are a variety of challenges to overcome before wide-scale retrofitting is a possibility. Most current solutions offer only thermal insulation, and do not take advantage of innovative passive and active technologies. Further, many solutions have low aesthetic quality and are uniform in terms of applicability to different types of buildings and façade orientations.

An innovative façade system for retrofitting

The MeeFS project is developing an innovative façade system which applies multifunctional energy efficiency panels and technological modules with innovative composite façade structure materials, for building envelope retrofitting. The MeeFS system will be easily adaptable to a variety of climatic conditions and any type of residential building. Its modular approach will allow for the integration of both active and passive technologies into the façade.

Development and demonstration

The MeeFS consortium will work collaboratively on the façade development, evaluation and demonstration, encompassing issues of architectural, energetic and breakthrough technologies, energy management, installation, energy efficiency and material life cycle. To prove the potential of the developed technology, the project will demonstrate its installation on a residential building in Spain.

The project brings together a multidisciplinary consortium with a well-balanced distribution between industry and research organisations. The team is composed of large companies (research capabilities), technologically specialised SMEs (manufacturers), research (dealing with energy efficient buildings and solutions) and open innovation and government organisations.
