EEB report: Designing Greener Electronic Products - Building synergies between EU product policy instruments or simply passing the buck?
The study examines the current and potential effectiveness of the EuP, RoHS and WEEE Directives to stimulate improvements along the life cycle of EEE. It focuses on:
- Providing an understanding of how the EuP, RoHS and WEEE Directives are addressing life cycle impacts of EEE.
- Discussing the inherent weaknesses in the EuP Directive and its methodology, and identify some potential areas for improvement.
- Identifying synergies, overlaps and gaps in addressing life cycle impacts of EEE through the implementation of these policy instruments.
The main focus of the study is on the EuP Directive and its associated MEEuP methodology, and the development of implementing measures for four product groups (lighting, televisions, refrigerators and freezers, and personal computers and monitors).

The aim of this Sectoral Overview is to provide stakeholders and policy makers in the uropean Institutions or in national administrations with responsibility for, or interest in, the evelopment of industrial and economic policy with a succinct analysis of the current ituation, and the factors affecting competitiveness, in all industrial sectors. It may also be of elevance to businesses and economic researchers who are interested in recent policy evelopments in the key industrial sectors. The focus here is on making a strategic assessment f the sector’s competitiveness taking account of the market structure, impact of the regulatory framework, external competitiveness, and the response to structural change.
