EC brings water efficiency into focus
Brussels, 16 November 2011 – The European Commission today launched a consulting process on water efficiency in buildings to run until 8 February 2012. It wants to gather views and additional information on a number of policy options in order to make recommendations in March.
The consultation comes ahead of the water protection blueprint, due out next year, which aims to ensure the supply of good quality water in sufficient quantities to legitimate users. The blueprint will form the water milestone on the recently launched Resource Efficiency Roadmap .
A number of policy measures are envisaged to boost water efficiency in buildings: minimum water efficiency requirements for certain products, water performance ratings and audits for buildings, water metering and higher prices.
A stakeholder conference in Brussels on 29 November will address the challenges facing Europe’s water supply and the different policy options available. The EC also has plans to launch a European innovation partnership on water efficiency in 2013.
